Opera del XVII secolo, ottavo decennio

La Vergine e il Bambino su un trono di nuvole vengono adorati dall’Arcangelo Michele, a sinistra e da San Francesco D’Assisi che si inginocchia a destra. San Michele calpesta un demonio, la cui coda si srotola nello sfondo. San Francesco tiene un semplice crocifisso e incrocia le braccia sul petto; le sue mani mostrano i segni delle stigmate. La destinazione originale di questo quadro era l’altare maggiore della Chiesa dei Cappuccini. San Michele Arcangelo era il patrono della Vecchia Taverna. Mattia Preti eseguì almeno tre dipinti per la Chiesa dei Cappuccini in Taverna: quest’opera e la Madonna del Carmelo furono entrambe trasferite nella Chiesa di San Domenico nel 1935, quando la Chiesa dei Cappuccini venne definitivamente abbandonata.

The Virgin and Child on a throne of clouds are adored by Michele the Archangel on the left side and St. Francis of Assisi who kneels to the right.. St. Michael is trampling the devil whose tail is unrolls into the background. St. Francis is holding a crucifix and crossing his arms on his chest.

His hands show signs of wounds. The original destination of this work was the main altar of the Church of the CapuchinsSt. Michael the Archangel was the patron of the Old Tavern. Mattia Preti performed at least three paintings for the Church of the Capuchins in Taverna. This work and the Madonna of Carmel were both transferred to the Church of San Domenico in 1935 when the Church of the Capuchins was finally left.
