La vigorosa figura del Battista di Preti, domina la superficie di questa tela; un voluminoso mantello rosso avvolge la figura e la separa dai colori molto simili degli alberi e delle rocce. La coppa in primo piano è un riferimento al battesimo di Cristo. A destra, un angelo accarezza un agnello, simbolo di Cristo. Nell’angolo in basso a destra, Mattia Preti ha incluso il suo autoritratto come donatore dell’altare stesso. L’artista è vestito con una tunica rossa e bianca. Il quadro è stato mandato dal Preti da Malta per decorare un altare che egli aveva fatto costruire nella prima cappella laterale sinistra della Chiesa di San Domenico. Il quadro di San Giovanni Battista e quello di San Sebastiano, possono essere sufficientemente comparabili in stile e tecnica di esecuzione, ciò conferma che entrambi i dipinti risalgono allo stesso periodo, circa al 1687.

The strong figure of Jhoan the Baptist, is the most important element by this painting.; a voluminous red cloak wrapped the figure separating it from the trees and rocks having a very similar color. The cup in the foreground is a reference to the baptism of Christ.On theright, an angel is caressing a lamb,symbol of Christ. In the lower corner on the right, Mattia Preti included him-self in this painting.The artist is dressed in a red and white tunic.The picture was sent by Preti from Malta in order to decorate an altar placed in the first chapel on the left side of the Church of San Domenico. The picture of St. John the Baptist and St. Sebastian, may be sufficiently comparable in style and technique of execution, this confirms that both the paintings were realized around the same period, approximately during the 1687.
